Having grown 10% annually over 2000-2010, the Australian advertising industry retains momentum for further expansion as the country´s economy is growing strongly. The total market increased by 156% over the review period as a whole to reach A$19.8 billion by the end of 2010.
The largest year-on-year growth of 21% was recorded in 2007, and the market grew continuously throughout the decade, even during the economic downturn. Yet growth in 2009 was only 4%, as the economic downturn weakened demand for advertising services and made companies more cautious regarding large advertising investments.
However, in 2010 the market grew strongly again, and increasing business and consumer confidence boosted advertising revenue. Businesses are clearly the vital customer group for the industry, and their spending on advertising constituted 99% of the entire market each year throughout the review period.
