With A$43.4 billion in turnover as of end-2010, the Australian basic precious and non-ferrous metals manufacturing industry had demonstrated 10% average annual growth since 2000. The industry is one of the major foreign revenue earners for the country, responsible for nearly 14% of Australian total export sales.

Exports exceeded A$38 billion in 2010, up from A$16.5 billion in 2000. The largest and the fastest-growing export market was India, accounting for over 27% of total foreign trade value and representing Asia´s growing appetite for metals over the review period. Other large and growing Asian markets for Australian metal producers include China, with 9% of total export value, followed by Thailand and Korea, each capturing 6%.

The country is now the world´s fourth-largest producer of primary aluminium, generating over A$25 billion in sales per year. Domestic use of aluminium is mainly related to construction, transport and packaging applications.
