Despite the soaring popularity of e-books and audio books, the Australian market for publishing of books continued to see healthy average annual growth of 5% over 2000-2010 to reach more than A$6 billion by the end of the latter year. Demand in the reviewed market is divided between commercial and private consumers.

By the end of the review period 61% of demand was attributed to household purchases, while 35%was generated by commercial consumers. The remaining 4% of total sales was represented by purchases for investment purposes; however, this share saw declining importance over the review period.

Among the most important factors for the development of the market is authors´ rights protection. The position of domestic producers improved faster than the overall market.

The turnover of local producers expanded at an average annual rate of 7% over the review period.
