Maybelline attained 8% market share in the Australian colour cosmetics market in 2012 while Lancome and L´Oreal Paris reported shares of 5% and 4% respectively. L´Oréal remains the leader in Australia in 2012 due to the strong performance of its brand portfolio. Maybelline, Garnier and L´Oréal Paris remained widely available throughout national supermarkets and beauty and personal care retailers, while luxury brands such as Lancôme and Biotherm remained prominent in high end retailers. In 2012, L´Oréal focused heavily on growth markets such as BB creams, introducing Revitalift BB cream, marketed as the first anti-ageing BB cream and Nude Magique BB cream, positioned as the first self-adjusting BB cream. launch another BB cream offering.

Value growth in 2012 was slightly less than the review period CAGR of 3%, as well as less than growth in 2010 and 2011. As consumers started looking for more value for money and manufacturers started providing the same, value growth started to slow down. However, due to the demand for colour cosmetics, combined with timely new product development, the slowdown in growth was only minor.The appreciating Australian dollar and rise of internet retailing also contributed to consumer expectations of price deflation.

Colour cosmetics is expected to continue to grow over the forecast period, at a constant value CAGR of 1%. The majority of this growth will be generated by other facial make-up, mascara and nail polish, in which trends and fashions are fast moving and consumers make frequent purchases. Constant product innovation in mascara, combined with interest in nail art, will fuel growth over the forecast period.
