The Australia consumer health market grew marginally faster in 2012 compared to the review period. Continued demand for OTC offerings and consumer interest in health and wellness saw weight management, sports nutrition and vitamins and dietary supplements all perform more strongly than during the review period. The performance of these categories combined ensured robust sales for consumer health in Australia.

Australia´s ageing population played a major role in consumer health sales growth in 2012. Treating ailments associated with ageing boosted sales in a number of categories. Urbanisation also impacted sales performance. Consumers living busy lifestyles, working in office environments and higher density living all contributed to rising sales for categories such as eye care, ear care, and cough, cold and allergy (hay fever) remedies.

Seven of the top 10 consumer health companies are foreign-based, large multinationals. However the Blackmores brand from Australian company Blackmores Ltd was the leading brand in consumer health. The top 10 players accounted for 49% of consumer health retail value sales over 2012.

Health and beauty retailers is the dominant retail channel for consumer health sales. These outlets benefit from strong customer support to help maintain sales. The growth in supermarkets distribution is an important aspect of the consumer health retail environment; as OTC offerings move down Australia´s scheduling system they gain greater exposure through grocery retailers.

A recent baby boom, an ageing population with baby boomers starting to retire and ongoing urbanisation will ensure demand for consumer health will remain robust over the forecast period. Consumer health products will have an important role to play in meeting consumer demand for health care solutions over the forecast period.
