Australia´s electrical equipment market expanded by 60% over 2000-2010 to reach a value of A$3.5 billion at the end of the latter year. Two-thirds of all goods were imported, with foreign manufacturers posting an increasing share in the Australian market.

By the end of 2010 imported equipment sold for nearly A$2 billion, up from A$1.1 billion in 2000, and ended up accounting for 66% of the total transaction value. The main import partner remained the US, with 26% of total trade value in 2010, but China was catching up rapidly. In 2000 this, Asia´s largest economy, captured less than 5% of Australia´s electrical equipment import market.

By 2010 the share had increased to 14%, and China overtook Japan as the second-largest foreign



supplier in this category. In Europe, Germany and the UK led sales to Australia, each accounting for 5% of total trade value.
