Australia may dig many metals from the earth and ship the raw material overseas, but the downstream industries that go with that – including recycling – are usually elsewhere, leaving the domestic metal recycling market with less than A$300 million in revenue in 2010.

The domestic recycling industry was worth A$1.6 billion in 2010, 82% of which was exports. The state efforts to improve recycling figures are still modest. The country currently offers tax breaks and concessions to companies digging metals out of the ground, but measures to recover those metals are lacking. Industry representatives say that 60% of the metal brought in for recycling is by corporates, and only 40% by councils.

There is no real legislation to make them to

collect more. Compared with other developed economies Australia still has little interest in rare trace metals used in computers and mobile phones.
