Australian news agencies were among the fastest growing businesses in the country over 2000-2010, with revenue expanding by an average 10% per year. Total demand reached A$6.7 billion in 2010, 85% of which attributed to B2B buyers, mainly Australian newspapers, magazines and broadcasters.

Another 14% of total sales were government purchases and only 1% of total sales was directly attributed to Australian households in 2010. The Australian Associated Press (AAP) is the dominant news agency in the country. AAP is run on a commercial basis and has four shareholders, all of whom are Australian newspaper owners.

John Fairfax Holdings and News Ltd own 45% of the company each, West Australian Newspapers has 8% stake and Rural Press holds the remaining 2% share. APP claims to be one of the few agencies worldwide that is independent from state funding and therefore influence. The main AAP revenue stream comes from news wire subscriptions by media companies and the public area.
