Non-metal recycling is a growing industry in Australia, generating A$4.4 billion in revenue in 2010. Especially in the second half of the review period, Australians demonstrated showed increased interest in recycling, and the industry´s turnover grew by an average of 9% per year from 2007.

According to government data for 2009, 99% of Australian households engaged in some form of waste re-use or recycling, but overall recycling ratios are considerably lower. For example, Australia consumes around 850,000 tonnes of glass per year, but only 350,000 tonnes (41%) is recovered for recycling.

Also, the volume of automotive plastic waste entering landfill created by the collision repair and steel recycling industries is still around 200,000 tonnes per annum. According to the latest available figures



of the country´s National Waste Report, nearly 44.8 billion tonnes of waste was generated in Australia in 2007, up 31% compared with 2003.
