Despite being one of the largest suppliers of uranium in the world, Australia´s A$271 million domestic nuclear industry is limited to applications in medicine and research. Based on estimates Australia accounts for around 23% of the world´s uranium reserves. In 2010 the country produced more than 7,000 tonnes of uranium oxide concentrate and was the third largest producer in the world behind Kazakhstan and Canada.

Most of Australia´s uranium production is exported and only a small portion is used domestically. Australia has no nuclear power producing capacities and relies on coal-run plants for its electricity supply.

However, Australia does have well-developed usage of radioisotopes in medicine, research and industry. Many of these isotopes are produced in the research reactor at Lucas Heights

near Sydney and are then used at hospitals, industrial sites and laboratories around the country.
