Australia´s market for manufacturing railway and tramway locomotives and rolling stock grew 10% on average annually over 2000-2010, and is set to continue on the growth path as the railway system requires new investments in coming years. Total growth reached 142% over the whole decade under review, from A$1.2 billion in 2000 to A$2.8 billion in 2010.

The market saw the largest year-on-year growth of 25% in both 2007 and 2008, and the largest decline of 14% in 2006. Over the decade, in the Australian railway system the trains became longer as new generation locomotives changed the previous norms. Businesses are the largest buyers, accounting for 73% of total market value in 2010.

This was up from the 60% value



share in 2000, showing their increasing importance in the buyers´ structure. Capital or investment purchases followed with 27% of the market in 2010 (down from 40% in 2000).
