Australia restaurants, bars market doubled in value over ten years to total A$71Bn in 2010

Over the review period of 2000-2010, the Australian market for restaurants doubled to reach a value of A$71 billion. Moreover, the Australian Bureau of Statistics´ results released in June 2011 confirm that the restaurant, café and catering industry is one of the most resilient areas of the economy.

The market was characterised by constant year on year growth which averaged 7% per annum. Despite a further worsening of economic conditions in 2009, consumer foodservice sustained value growth of 4%, similar that achieved the preceding year. Cheaper food choices in 100% home delivery/takeaway and fast food continued to be key contributors to performance in 2009.

The main buyer group was households, which accounted for an average 78% of total demand throughout the review period.B2B customers comprised 20% of the total in 2010, while the government was responsible for around 2%.
