Over the review period of 2000-2010 the Australian market for sewage and sanitation increased by 88% and reached a value of A$7.1 billion. Sewage and sanitation are considered necessity services, and therefore the market enjoys constant growth, which averaged 7% per annum over the review period.

The main buyer group is B2B customers, which accounted for 59% of the total market in 2010, 13 percentage points up on 2000. Households comprised 35% of the total market in 2010 compared with 48% in 2000. The Australian Government spent A$500 million on this industry in 2010 and accounted for 7% of the total market. Due to negligible amounts of foreign trade, the turnover of local producers followed the development of the market as a whole, and grew by 7% annually on average.

The main sector within the industry was collection and treatment of waste, which comprised on average 86% of total turnover and reached a value of A$7.3 billion by the end of the decade.
