The Australian sugar market expanded by 7% annually over 2000-2010, as the country´s sugar cane production continues to deal with the long-term issues of falling production area, fluctuating prices and extreme weather events, which have provided downwards pressure on production over the past decade.

Australia´s sugar market was valued at A$3 billion at the end of the review period, growing by 83% in total from 2000. Commercial customers almost doubled expenditure on sugar in value terms and generated 83% of total market sales in 2010. In the meantime, consumption by households declined by five percentage points over 2000-2010 to account for 17% of total market value at the end of the review period.

Increased media attention regarding the potential risks of consuming

artificial sweeteners will cause consumers to reconsider using these products. Additionally, as obesity and diabetes rates continue to climb, consumers will need to make drastic changes to their diets.
