The Australian electric lamps and lighting equipment market expanded by 47% since 2000 and reached A$1.7billion in 2010. Industry growth was fuelled by increasing prices, which rose by 17% over the decade, and expanding volumes. In constant prices the industry expanded by 42%.

The global economic crisis had an adverse impact on the industry in 2009, when it contracted by 9%.However, recovery did not take long and in 2010 the size of the industry exceeded pre-crisis levels. Growth throughout the review period averaged 4% annually.

The main demand for electric lamps and lighting equipment came from B2B customers, which accounted for 73% of demand in 2010. The second largest buyer group is households, which accounted for 12% of the total in 2010, with this being two percentage points lower in comparison with 2000. In 2010, 16% of demand was comprised of purchases for investment purposes. An important driver for the industry is the construction industry.
