There was a significantly increase in the variety of alternative free time activities for youth and older people during the review period. Despite this, the Australian musical instruments market continued to perform well, showing an average annual growth of 6% over 2000-2010.

In 2010, the market reached more than A$2 billion. Australia is characterised by its aborigines, whose population numbered approximately half a million in 2010. Aboriginal culture is famous for its unique musical instruments including the didgeridoo (also known as didjeridu), the bullroarer and the gum-leaf.

Best known is the didgeridoo, a simple wooden tube that is blown with the lips like a trumpet and gains its sonic flexibility from controllable resonances of the player´s vocal tract. The bullroarer is a

simple wooden slat whirled in a circle at the end of a cord, thus rotating about its axis and producing a pulsating low-pitched roar.
