Australia is the driest inhabited continent in the world, rainfall is variable, droughts common and water resources in many areas scarce. Despite all this, the market of collection and distribution of water grew by an average of 5% per annum over the review period to reach A$7.6 billion at the end of 2010.

The main buyers in the market under review throughout the decade were businesses. In 2000 these accounted for 48% of the total market, and having increased by 8% on average per annum the share of products acquired by businesses reached 57% by the end of the review period.

Households accounted for 48% in 2000, but their expenditure increased slower compared with businesses, and at the end of period purchased only 35% of products. Despite the fact households´ share dropped by 13 percentage points, their actual expenditure increased by 22% over 2000-2010.
