Bahrain Telecommunications Report Q4 2012 - New Study Released

Print article Print article
2012-10-26 14:24:51 - Fast Market Research recommends "Bahrain Telecommunications Report Q4 2012" from Business Monitor International, now available

Bahrain's mobile market is close to saturation, with quarterly growth rates in the low single digits and mobile penetration approaching 130%. However the broadband sector (fixed and mobile) is set to grow rapidly over the medium term as a result of increasing investment in broadband infrastructure and the relatively low penetration of data services in the country.

Key data

* Mobile growth slowed in Q112 compared to the two previous quarters as the seasonal effects of promotional activities during the latter part of 2011 wore off.
* Bahrain's mobile ARPU fell slightly in Q112 as increasing competition and market saturation sustained the downward pressure on mobile tariffs
* The number of postpaid subscriptions as a proportion of total subscriptions improved in

Q112, compared to the previous quarter and the same time in 2011 as operators' growing focus of highvalue customers starts to pay-off.

Risk/Reward Ratings

There was no change to Bahrain's aggregate score on BMI's telecoms Risk/Reward ratings table which, at 48.6, is just under the average regional score of 50.4. Bahrain's lowest score is in the Industry Rewards category, where a combination of slower subscriber growth and decreasing ARPUs is largely responsible for the week ratings. The country's highest score is in the Country Risk category which reflects a gradual return to political and economic stability following a wave of anti-government protests for most of 2011 and the early part of 2012. Bahrain continues to score below the regional average in Country Rewards and Industry Risk categories.

Key Trends And Developments

In a bid to take advantage of the growing demand for advanced data services, Bahrain's newest broadband service provider Greenisis introduced an 'unlimited' broadband offer, with no download or upload restrictions or fair usage policy, in July 2012. Meanwhile, the number of broadband service providers in the country could increase in the next few years after the government announced in July that it may award two additional licences for 4G LTE networks in Q113 if the three currently licensed operators are unable to provide LTE investment and network coverage.
