2014-04-18 15:22:02 - Digestive Remedies in Belgium - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com

Janssen-Cilag (owned by Johnson & Johnson) was the undisputed leader in a fragmented competitive environment in the Belgium digestive remedies market in 2012. It held a 24% share of value sales in 2012 due to its Motilium, Imodium, and to a lesser extent Touristil brands in antacids, diarrhoeal remedies and motion sickness remedies. Its flagship Motilium brand largely monopolises the gastroprocinetic segment, owing to its efficiency, its anti-nausea properties and its convenience, thanks to the launch of an instant format at the beginning of the review period. Despite a decline in sales and share in 2012, Imodium holds the leading position in diarrhoeal remedies, whilst Touristil, the leader in motion sickness remedies, saw a decline in 2012.

factors in 2012. After the positive switch of ranitidine in H2 blockers in 2009, after years of waiting, the first proton pump inhibitors were able to enter the Belgian market from the end of 2011, notably thanks to Maalox Control (pantoprazole-based) and Sandoz´s Acidcare (omeprazole-based). On the other hand, the category bore the brunt of the sudden questioning of Janssen-Cilag´s Motilium, the leading brand in digestive remedies.

Trade sources are rather pessimistic about the scope for development in digestive remedies in the coming years. Although the positive switch of "third-generation" antacids, proton pump inhibitors, which were only available on an Rx basis, could bring a breath of fresh air to the category, the impact of the continuous decline of Motilium could be stronger. In addition, many traditional antacids could suffer as a result of distrust amongst chemists/pharmacists, who perceive these products as only treating the symptoms and as being less effective than OTC H2 blockers and proton pump inhibitors.
