Nestlé led the Brazil baby food market in 2011, with 82% share of value sales. Nestlé has a massive participation in all segments of baby food, and until 2011, the company monopolises sales of prepared baby food and other baby food. In addition, Nestlés traditional brands in milk formula and dry baby food such as Nan, Ninho and Nestlé Farinha Láctea have a high level of recognition amongst paediatricians and mothers.

Baby food is set to increase by 11% in current value terms in 2012. It will grow at a slower pace compared to the review period CAGR of 16%, as a result of reduced consumer confidence. This led consumers to reduce expenses with items that are not perceived essential and that can be substituted by homemade food.

Baby food is expected to record moderate growth during the forecast period, posting a CAGR of 4% in constant value terms. Slower growth is a result of the weak performance of dried baby food as consumers are shifting from traditional mingau to healthier options such as muesli and cereals, and convenient options such as prepared baby food.
