Risks to Bulgaria's banking sector stability remain elevated given the sector's high exposure to Greece by way of bank ownership - a little less than 30% of total assets in the system are Greek owned. However, recent developments out of the eurozone, whereby policy makers have come up with a preliminary plan to avert a disorderly default by Greece, has somewhat mitigated this risk. However, we remain cautious towards Bulgaria's banking sector due to our view that the eurozone debt crisis is likely to rumble on for a number of years and that volatility in financial markets will remain pronounced as policy responses will be fraught with implementation risks. Going forward, keeping these risks in mind, we see only a

muted recovery in the country's commercial banking system. On the back of data released by the Bulgarian National Bank (BNB) that show deposits increased by 12.9% year-on-year (y-o-y) in August, up from 12.7% the previous month, we have revised our forecast for 2011 deposit growth to 11.0%, as we believe this will likely moderate in the fourth quarter. Looking to 2012, we hold to our forecast for 9.0% deposit growth as we expect the deteriorating macroeconomic outlook to result in lower deposits.
