Confectionery is less essential for living compared with fresh foods and other types of foods that provide essential nutrients. The population decline continued in 2012. Furthermore, the slow economy continued to minimise household spending power for daily living, and led to consumers minimising expenditure on non-essential confectionery. This led to confectionery packaging continuing to decline in unit volume terms.
Confectionery packaging is predicted to see a slightly negative CAGR in volume terms over the forecast period, decreasing to 8.5 billion units in 2017. Sugar confectionery packaging is expected to continue to see positive growth with a 1% CAGR over the forecast period, supported by growth in pastilles, gums, jellies and chews. However, chocolate confectionery and gum packaging are expected to experience negative growth CAGRs over the forecast period, declining marginally and by just over 2% per annum respectively.
