In 2012, consumers returned to making long-term investments in other types of durable goods, such as cars and housing. Sales of consumer electronics suffered from weak demand with the end of the 2010 eco-point system initiative and 2011 digital terrestrial switchover.
The ongoing switch to smartphones was the key trend for 2012. While this switch started among niche technology savvy consumers, the spread of smartphones is penetrating the mass market. While mobile phones, and consumer electronics overall, continued to benefit from this trend, some product
categories, particularly low-end models in portable media players, imaging devices and in-car entertainment, suffered from cannibalisation.
