Since retail, travel, lodging and leisure locations have higher rents and must be able to generate strong sales in order to remain profitable, branded outlets tend to have a greater number of establishments in non-stand-alone locations. Lodging locations in particular have higher-profile branded outlets than other locations.
All locations in consumer foodservice saw declining outlet numbers in 2012. The prolonged economic recession dealt a further blow. Chained operators tried to rationalise their portfolios, and independents struggled to survive the harsh competition.
