China water market to see CHY430Bn planned investment in wastewater treatment as part of the 12th five-year plan
China Water Report Q1 2014 - a new market research report on 2014-03-17 05:35:08
China´s water sector has many obstacles to overcome if it is to meet the needs of a rapidly expanding population, which is becoming increasingly urbanised. Under the 12th Five-Year Plan (2011-2015), CHY430bn is to be invested in wastewater treatment alone, with financing stepped up from the 11th Five-Year Plan. However, the country´s pollution problems are so vast that is will take strategy - not just money - to bring the water sector and its infrastructure up to scratch. A water deficit is anticipated long term.

There is considerable disparity between the North and South in terms of water supply. 80% of China´s water is located in the South, but half the population and two-thirds of the country´s farmland are in the North.

With agricultural processes, including that for rice, demanding high volumes, it is essential that distribution networks are upgraded and maintained to ensure the country utilises these crops, and the income they generate. However, the World Bank claims that China´s water pollution problems are costing the country around 2.3% of its GDP, making the issues even more pressing.
