Industry revenue for the Motel industry in China is expected to decrease 0.7% in 2013 to $21.5 billion. Annualized growth over the past five years is estimated at 3.5%. There are about 71,028 motel enterprises in China operating 73,285 establishments and employing about 2.12 million people with an estimated payroll of $3.66 billion.

Currently, this industry accounts for about 33.0% of China´s accommodation sector. Half of the sector´s revenue is generated by hotels, which provide better services and surroundings than motels. The ongoing establishment of hotel chains and family hotels has intensified competition and reduced the size of China´s Motel industry. Rising labor costs and rent fees have also increased pressure on motel operators.

In the next five years, industry revenue is

forecast to drop at an annualized rate of 1.9% to $19.5 billion due to increasingly intense competition from other accommodation service providers and rising cost burdens.
