The Power Grid Construction industry in China has been growing 11.4% annually over the past five years to $515.4 billion in 2013. Two events contributed to strong growth over the period; both the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008 and the Shanghai World Expo in 2010 led to large government investments in new power infrastructure construction and improvements. The total length of power transmission lines constructed grew from 639.8 thousand kilometers in 2008 to an estimated 962.2 thousand kilometers in 2013.

Just three enterprises operate in the industry controlling all power grid construction activities. The top industry player, the State Grid Corporation of China, controls over 88.0% of China´s land area and completed transmission lines of 713.1 thousand kilometers in 2012, making up over 75.0% of overall length.

China Southern Power Grid Corporation constructed 165.6 thousand kilometers of transmission lines in 2012, accounting for over 18.0% of the total. Inner Mongolia Power Grid Corporation is mainly in charge of the western part of the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and constructed 15.6 thousand kilometers of transmission lines in 2012.
