Snack bars still struggle to attract the attention of Croatian consumers; with sales of only 60g per capita in 2013, it is the second smallest packaged food category, bigger only than noodles. Snack bars are generally perceived as offering good value for money, and their affordable unit price remains a generator of sales in the category. Major players tried to attract consumers by launching new products, which was a partial success.

Mars is expected to maintain its leading position in snack bars in Croatia in 2013, thanks to its Milky Way Minute brand giving it a 34% value share. In second position in 2013 is expected to be Schwartauer Werke, with a 16% value share.

Snack bars are advertised through all media channels in Croatia, and the promotion of snack bars focuses on their healthy attributes. This is because of the increasing number of Croatian people suffering from heart disease and cardiovascular disease, not to mention the increasingly urgent issue of the high number of overweight and obese people in Croatia, and the increasing prevalence of other health problems which can be linked to diet. Nevertheless, snack bars is still expected to record growth in Croatia during the forecast period; set to be derived mainly from the overall trend towards health and wellness and more active lifestyles in Croatia.
