Further innovations in the Czech Republic beer market marked 2012, with consumers turning away from internationally owned brands to experiment with new flavours. Younger consumers are switching towards stronger beers and savouring them for longer.
Exports increased by 9% as the European economy began to improve. But imports declined as larger brewers set up their own filling facilities. The on-premise market fell as consumers switched towards off-premise and tightened their budgets.
Pilsner Urquell´s Gambrinus brand dropped to a market share of just under 20% in 2012. It, nonetheless, remains the leading brand by far. Consumers are now purchasing more expensive beer for consumption at home, meaning Private Labels have started to suffer.
PET has now become an acceptable choice for consumers, with leading brewers now offering their brands in this packaging. Prices have increased in the on- and off-premise sectors due to growing costs and a higher rate of VAT. Some smaller breweries have benefited from customer tastes turning towards more traditional local brands.
