What is the current market landscape and what is changing?
The warmer autumn months combined with the stabilization of the economic situation helped to drive beer sales which after three years of decline saw the first signs of recovery. Consumers are switching away from traditional vycepni beer to stronger beers, especially 11deg lager, but young
consumers are becoming more experimental and choose lower alcohol beers, especially flavored options. Domestic sales thus bounced back. Consumers are now turning away from internationally owned brands and are more willing to experiment with new flavors. They are also opting for a better taste and savoring it for longer rather than drinking a large quantity of lager which is typical of old, traditional drinkers

The Czech market now offers around 550 different brands, up by 100 new options just over one year
The economic uncertainty still continues to force many consumers to buy off-premise, rather than drink in pubs
Exports also recovered as the economic situation in Europe stabilized for most of the year
NrPET has become accepted for outdoor activities, with many of the leading brewers now offering their brands in this packaging.
Key Highlights
Young consumers are becoming more experimental and choose lower alcohol beers, especially flavored options. Domestic sales thus bounced back by a healthy 3% in 2011 as a result.
Significant growth was seen in demand for 11deg lager variants of local smaller brands and all the leading brewers have now launched such products.
The leader, Pilsner Urquell's Gambrinus (SABMiller), continued to lose share, although it still remains the leading brand by far, with volumes declining to 20% of the market in 2011. Its position however remains unchallenged.
The no alcohol beers experienced a growth again driven by Radegast Birell (SABMiller), Frii (Heineken) and Staropramen Nealko. In fact most of the segment experienced growth as stricter driving legislation is in force.
Private Label sales grew again last year largely due to Lidl Deep brand which gained quick popularity while most other Private Label brands were losing appeal as consumers treated themselves to stronger more expensive beers.
Companies Mentioned in this Report: BUDEJOVICKY BUDVAR, HEINEKEN CESKA REPUBLIKA, K BREWERY TRADE AS, PLZENSKY PRAZDROJ (PILSNER URQUELL GROUP), PMS PREROV, PIVOVARY STAROPRAMEN, PIVOVAR SVIJANY AS
