The France contact lenses market is quite consolidated, dominated by international key players. There are two key players, with Ciba Vision France ranked in first position in 2011 thanks to the success of its daily disposable contact lenses Dailies. In second position was Johnson & Johnson SA with its brand Acuvue, which remained a well-accepted product in France thanks to brand loyalty. Together these companies account for 60% of total value sales. Bausch & Lomb France SA ranks in third position, followed by CooperVision France.
Daily disposable lenses accounted for 24% of total value sales in 2012 and the category saw the smallest decline in both volume and value terms. Sales remained largely static as daily disposables met consumer requirements for
convenience, fashion and product innovation. Overall sales fell slightly as consumers chose to use fewer pairs of lenses per week or month, with spectacles used on a greater number of occasions. However, new products and coloured lenses both posted growth.
Overall, value sales of contact lenses are expected to post a CAGR of just 0.6% over the forecast period. The contact lenses market is expected to show real dynamism in product innovation but also in promotional activities thanks to the expected increase in internet retailing. The predicted unstable economic climate should lead consumers to move towards more affordable products without compromising their need for contact lenses. However, lower prices will constrain value growth.
