The French debit card market saw its transaction value increase by 5% in current value terms in 2012 to reach a value of €336.4 billion. The market saw the actual number of debit cards in circulation increase by 3%, to reach 75 billion.A debit card is a plastic card that provides the cardholder electronic access to his or her bank account at a financial institution. Some cards have a stored value with which a payment is made, while most relay a message to the cardholder´s bank to withdraw funds from a payee´s designated bank account.French debit cards are branded with the Carte Bleue logo, which assures acceptance throughout France. annual fee to additionally have a Visa or a MasterCard logo on their Carte Bleue, so that the card is accepted internationally.Groupement des Cartes Bancaires remained the leading operator of debit cards in France in 2011 in terms of cards in circulation, number of transactions and the total value of transactions. However, it continued to see its share decrease, to the benefit of other players, such as MasterCard International and Visa Europe.In 2011, the landscape remained unchanged compared to the previous year, with all debit cards issuers having static shares in 2011.
