Germany carbonates market: Value CAGR forecast to decline -1% between 2012-2017

Coca-Cola GmbH continued to lead the Germany carbonates market in 2012 with a 39% share of off-trade value sales. Among the top five players, Coca-Cola was also the fastest growing company, registering value sales growth of 2%, this being mainly driven by its low calorie variants such as Coca-Cola Zero.

Compared to the review period average, 2012 saw slower volume growth, a factor which can be attributed to the maturity of carbonates but also the fact that many consumers are shifting to bottled water, which is considered even healthier than low calorie carbonates. Within carbonates, low calorie cola carbonates posted the strongest growth, however, of 4% and 5% in retail volume and current value terms, respectively.

Health and wellness is expected to remain an important trend over the forecast period. In a very mature and saturated category such as carbonates, products with healthier characteristics will continue to offer growth potential.
