Reduced prices of blu-ray consumer devices combined with the increased demand for high-quality digitial entertainment is driving growth in the global blu-ray market over recent years. The primary challenges in this market include the following: Lack of awareness in developing nations; High price sensitivity among digital home entertainment users; Commercially available, pirated Blu-ray content that reduces overall Blu-ray market share;.

Blu-ray is the optical disc format developed jointly by the Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) and the world´s leading consumer electronics manufacturers such as Apple, JVC, LG, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, Sony, and Sharp. The Blu-ray format enables recording and playback of HD video and offers significantyl more storage capacity than traditional optical recording media, such as DVD. The technology is used extensively to

record feature-length movies in high quality. Presently, disc recording tools such as DVD, DVD-RW, DVD-W, and DVD-RAM employ red lasers to read and write files; Blu-ray uses blue-laser technology to read and write files on optical discs.

Blue lasers have shorter wavelengths of nm vis-à-vis red lasers with 650 nm. The shorter Blu-ray wavelength enables more content to be packed on a single disc owing to greater precision and sharper focus of the laser beam. Most of the international studios have announced their support for Blu-ray technology and will continue to release new titles in Blu-ray apart from DVD.

Convergence of Formats: from a one-to-one to a one-to-many model, where a single format can be read on several devices

Lack of awareness in developing nations
High price sensitivity among digital home entertainment users
Commercially available pirated Blu-ray content dwindles the overall market share of Blu-ray
