2014-04-30 05:01:01 - Internet Retailing in Ireland - a new market research report on companiesandmarkets.com

Internet retailing in Ireland continued to record outstanding growth during 2013 despite the overall weak economic conditions. With the number of store-based retailers offering online facilities growing on daily basis and with high numbers of Irish consumers switching to internet retailing from more traditional retailing formats in search of lower prices, internet retailing in Ireland is very much in the ascendant. Irish consumers also continued to respond favourably to the opportunity to compare and contrast products and prices from the comfort of their own homes before making a final purchasing decision. Several of Ireland´s key store-based retailers launched online retailing facilities during 2013, including Boots and Dunnes Stores, with grocery retailer Super Valu making strong gains on its internet retailing

operation, which launched during 2012.

Amazon.com Inc remained the leading company in internet retailing in Ireland in 2013 with a 7% value share. The company´s very diverse product range, which includes books, games, DVDs, giftware and media products combined with its reputation for reliability and value for money ensures that it will continue to lead internet retailing in Ireland for some time to come. As well as its MP3 download service, through which the company is able to compete directly with Apple Inc´s iTunes music download service, the company offers the Kindle e-reader and associated applications which allow customers to purchase and download e-books from the internet for less than the price of standard paperbacks. Around a quarter of a million titles were available in this way through Amazon´s Irish website at the end of the review period. Amazon´s activities in media products retailing positioned it in one of the most dynamic areas of retailing in Ireland.

Internet retailing in Ireland is expected to increase in constant value at a CAGR of 18% over the forecast period as more store-based retailers and consumers continue to move towards internet retailing. The ability to drive the performance of the category by offering superior value for money as well as the ability to generate revenue in multiple regions of Ireland without the necessity of maintaining a physical presence are set to remain extremely important features of internet retailing in Ireland during the forecast period, with the economic conditions set to remain harsh and economic recovery expected to prove slow and fraught with difficulties.
