Laboratories Garnier continued to lead the Ireland sun care market with a 49% value share in 2012, through its Garnier Ambre Solaire brand. The brand continues to benefit from high profile advertising campaigns and has sustained a strong presence in stores. This has enabled it to sustain high recognition and ensure strong brand loyalty among Irish consumers.

Overall sun care sales grew by 1% in 2012. The restraints on disposable incomes due to the economic downturn mean Irish consumers are cutting back on spending where possible. Fewer Irish consumers are going on foreign holidays, which impacted on the sale of sun protection products. Those who are planning holidays are also shopping around for products that are on promotion and on special offer, resulting in an overall unit price drop. Furthermore poor weather conditions in the summer of 2012 resulted in difficulties in sales.

Sun care is expected to register a contracting CAGR of 1% over the forecast period with all three categories falling in terms of constant value. Growth in self-tanning products will be much lower than what was previously expected. While it is trendy for Irish consumers´ with their natural, pale skin tones, to have darker skin, the category is reaching maturity, and unit prices are falling as more promotional activity is taking place due to category saturation.
