Japan home improvement stores market: Value sales increase at 1% CAGR between 2008-2012

The Japan home improvement stores market is fragmented with no player holding more than 10%. However, players including Homac, Kahma, and Daiki all operated under their global owner, DCM Holdings Co Ltd that held 17% value share in 2012. DCM Holdings Co Ltd also leads in terms of selling space with an 18% share of the total in 2012. After the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011, widespread fear among consumers about shortages of daily necessities created large demand for home improvement and gardening stores in Japan. Although two of its outlets were forced to close temporarily after the earthquake, DCM Holdings Co Ltd strived to deliver products to consumers during the emergency. Sales of emergency kits and safety helmets increased

 

 

and energy-efficient products such as LED lights recorded high sales volumes over the review period.

With growing value sales, the number of outlets also increased by 2% in 2012. Komeri Co Ltd announced plans to increase the number of large outlets with retail space over 100,000 sq m. Currently Komeri Co Ltd has 20 outlets of this size and aims to accelerate openings of similar-sized stores in the Kanto region. DCM Holdings Co Ltd also conducted major renovation of its 100 stores and reflected local needs by integrating more ideas from each store manager and regional managers. Previously, DCM Holdings Co Ltd used to provide detailed instructions about how to display products on store shelves, but the company will emphasise localisation of each store to respond to regional needs.
