Latin American Carriers embrace machine-to-machine (M2M)

Carriers in the region have turned their attention to machine-to-machine (M2M) as a new revenue source with great potential.
Traditional mobile operators as well as niche M2M providers are implementing strategies aimed at both capturing emerging deals and positioning them for future growth, which have yet to reach full potential.
In particular, mobile operators use different go-to-market strategies, depending on the size of the opportunity and the level of their own maturity regarding M2M.
The huge potential of M2M lies in its manifold uses, from providing connectivity to popular consumer devices (e.g., tablets), to enabling retailers the expansion of sales capacity across the floor with mobile point of sale (POS) solutions, to providing households and businesses the tools to consume energy more efficiently.
So far, Brazil is the most developed Latin American country in terms of M2M connections, followed by Mexico and Argentina.
The term M2M communications is quite broad and can be used both in the wire and wireless spaces. That is, connectivity can be provided over cellular/mobile through satellite, wireline/Internet, as well as through other private and public telecommunication networks.
M2M communication refers to digital communication between an endpoint and an enterprise´s backend system over cellular networks. For example, a sensor-based tank monitoring system that monitors liquid in storage tanks uses automated communication to send messages to a central monitoring station about the levels of liquid in the tanks. Another example of M2M communication is an in-vehicle navigation system. The system communicates with the service provider´s backend -- in response to specific commands from a human operator -- and receives relevant information for the vehicle´s driver or passengers.
