Domestic tourism flows continued to perform moderately in 2013, with the number of trips growing by 1% to register 34 million. While leisure trips with free accommodation grew, leisure trips with paid accommodation and business trips in general within the country decreased. When looking at weekend trips with paid accommodation, Finns increasingly opted to stay in Estonia instead of domestic destinations. Estonia offered competitive prices for accommodation and other services.
The number of domestic trips is expected to stagnate over the forecast period. Although the economic downturn had a positive impact on domestic leisure travel during the review period, Finns are increasingly opting for Estonia for their economy trips. The number of business trips is expected to decline during the first two years of the forecast period. All in all, the number of domestic trips was already high as at the end of the review period, and it would be very challenging to increase this number over the forecast period; however, with and improving economy, business travel is expected to record growth over the forecast period.
