The mobile handset market saw a period of rapid growth between 2010 and 2011, predominantly down to Samsung unveiling an impressive array of handsets, smartphones and tablets.The company has gained the market share across several major regions and all that remains now is whether or not Samsung can continue to grow, and what strategies they will employ to retain their market leadership. Research has shown that in 2012 the company stands to achieve revenues of $48 billion from the sale of mobile handsets alone.In the second quarter of 2012, Samsung widened its market share lead over rivals Nokia and Apple, shipping 90.43 million mobile handsets, giving the South Korean consumer electronics powerhouse a 21.6% market share, up from 20.7% in

 

 

the first quarter of this year and up from 16.3% the same quarter a year ago.Samsung saw a boost from its line up of Android-running Galaxy smartphones, especially with its recently launched Galaxy S3 handset, showing that smartphones now account for slightly more than half of all Samsung´s mobile device sales.The growth of Samsung within the mobile handset market comes as Nokia, whose total mobile device market share fell to 19.9% in the second quarter from 22.8% a year ago, struggles. Nokia, however, saw a slight increase from its 19.8% market share in the first quarter.However, the other leading manufacturers suffered a decline in sales due to the challenging economic environment and users postponing upgrades to take advantage of high-profile device launches and promotions available later in the year, slowing demand across markets.High-profile smartphone launches from key manufacturers such as the anticipated Apple iPhone 5, along with Chinese manufacturers pushing 3G and preparing for major device launches in the second half of 2012, will drive the smartphone market upward.
