Netherlands renewables target reverts to its former target of 14% by 2020
Netherlands Renewables Report Q1 2014 - a new market research report on 2014-03-17 06:07:01
Although there has been a great deal of activity in the Netherlands renewables sector over the past quarter, this has been within the parameters of our projections and so our forecasts have not changed.

However we are increasingly positive with regards to the country´s renewables sector and highlight geothermal and wind electricity generation as key areas to watch in the future.

However, our longer-term outlook to 2020 and beyond is looking somewhat despondent, following an announcement earlier in 2013 that after boosting its 2020 renewables target from 14% to 16%, the Netherlands reverted to its former target after less wind capacity was developed than had been expected.

We believe this is partially due to the popular perception of wind turbines as unsightly, so although the populace as a whole is in favour of renewable energy and wind generation, it seems they would rather it occurred elsewhere. However, the recent EUR1.3mn communal purchase of a wind turbine by 1700 Dutch would seem to signal a potential change in this perception. People who have part ownership (no matter how small) of their own turbine and are able to directly benefit from it are less likely to protest against their presence. We feel that such grass roots level developments, led by Windcentrale, could result in a more widespread acceptance of turbines in the country in the future.
