Sales of vacuum cleaners suffered from the economic turndown in 2013 than earlier in the review period. Still, there is a general consensus that replacing vacuum cleaners should be postponed until consumer spending improved, but the value added by health and aesthetics claims boosted the performance of vacuum cleaners to clear growth anyway. The positive volume growth in 2013 was mainly the result of the continuous growth of robotic vacuum cleaners, as most other types of vacuum cleaners only showed a marginal volume increase in 2013.

The race for the top spot in vacuum cleaners heated up in 2013, as the first-ranked Electrolux Nederland BV continued to weaken in volume share in contrast to second-ranked Koninklijke Philips managing to marginally improve in volume share from 2012, following years of declining share. Electrolux registered a declining volume share over almost the entire review period as a result of stiff competition from more innovative brands such as Dyson, Samsung and Kärcher. In 2013, Asimotion BV also gained share as a result of the popularity of its robotic vacuum cleaner iRobot Roomba.

Vacuum cleaners faces good growth prospects over the forecast period. The expected economic recovery will support demand, particularly for more premium types of vacuum cleaner, such as robotic vacuum cleaners. Accordingly, vacuum cleaners´ value sales will benefit from a trend towards higher-priced appliances, especially towards the end of the forecast period.
