In-car entertainment was strongly affected by political and economic uncertainty in 2013. Many in-car entertainment products such as in-dash media players are not considered a necessity by most Egyptian consumers and, due to their relatively high unit prices, are also not affordable for many people. In addition, high income consumers tend to opt for cars that already possess high performance in-car entertainment systems.
Garmin led in-car entertainment sales in 2012 with a retail volume share of 34% - a one percentage point increase from the previous year. This was due to the company´s dominance of in-car navigation, where it held a retail volume share of 78% in 2012. Garmin´s leadership can be largely attributed to the unavailability of the TomTom brand
in Egypt as its service is not supported in the country.
Over the forecast period, sales of in-car entertainment are set to decline. Even though in-car navigation is expected to benefit from ongoing consumer interest, this will not be enough to offset the decline in sales of in-dash media players and in-car speakers.
