Portable media players registered a sharp decline in retail volume sales for all product types during 2012 and 2013. In a development that already started in 2010, portable media players are increasingly being substituted with other portable devices such as mobile phones or tablet PCs that offer additional functionalities such as being able to play music or other media content. Consumers in Egypt are meanwhile proving increasingly unable or unwilling to spend on additional gadgets such as portable players.

The leader in portable players in Egypt during 2012 was Creative Technology, which recorded a retail volume share of 28% and appeals to consumers with its range of affordable products and attractive designs. Mansour Group ranked second with its Samsung range and recorded a retail volume share of 19% in 2012 and was followed by Sony (17%). Both Samsung and Sony also offer a number of competitively priced and sleek portable media players which appeal to mostly younger consumers. Sony, for example, offers its Sony Walkman range and launched its Walkman B160 Series of MP3 players in 2011.

Portable players sales will continue to decline over the forecast period until 2017, with all areas of portable media players predicted to see a strong decrease. Egyptian consumers will increasingly prioritise other consumer electronics over portable media players, which are seen to offer few benefits over other devices like smartphones or tablet PCs. In addition, many Egyptian consumers do not have the disposable income to purchase additional devices.
