The video market in Poland has been heavily affected by the increased distribution of video by online distribution channels with the onset of tablets and also smart tvs influencing the way consumer watch videos and tv programmes. Consumer electronics registered a more moderate increase in retail volume sales in 2012. The growth in consumer electronics was driven by higher demand for tablets and e-readers, which are regarded as ´nice to have´ entertainment items. Smartphones increasingly displaced feature phones, becoming a more desirable electronic device for everyday use. Such products were more affordable due to falling retail selling prices. The advanced digitization of terrestrial television in Poland had a positive impact on sales of digital TVs. Poles have been prepared for the analogue broadcast switch-off since 2009, when the government announced when and where the transition to a digital signal would occur. However, a real boom for new digital TVs was observable only in 2012 and 2013. Consumers took advantage of the opportunities related to digital terrestrial television to replace their old TV with a new one with MPEG4 tuner. This process created also an opportunity to purchase digital TVs with other up-to-date features like Smart TV or 3D TV. The final deadline for the analogue broadcast switch-off is 31 July 2013.
Digital Agenda for Europe requires EU countries to secure access to the internet for all citizens by the end of 2013, while widespread internet access with a throughput of 30Mb/s is to be provided by 2020. In Poland, the rate of broadband internet subscribers has been increasing year-on-year. However, at the end of 2012, only 67% of households had access to broadband internet, according to data issued by the Polish Ministry of Administration and Digitization. Modern high-speed broadband has been provided in large cities, while the infrastructure was much less developed in rural areas, where there were localities in which no residents had access to the internet. Although there was extensive investment in the construction and modernization of the broadband internet infrastructure in 2013, the requirements for 2013 set out by the Digital Agenda for Europe are not expected to be met.
