Transportation generated substantial value sales which were driven by air transportation. The growth of online value transportation sales outweighed growth of offline value transportation sales in 2012. Internet transaction increased in significance in Thai transportation since the emergence of low cost carriers. Low cost carriers have changed Thai consumers´ behaviour to gradually shift away from offline services toward online self-service. On the other hand, other transportation recorded lower positive value growth of 2% owing to cheap ticket prices of bus, rail and ferry.
Thai Airways International, the national carrier, remained in the leading position of air transportation in 2012. Thai Airways is not only popular among locals, but also receives a good response from international travellers. The Royal Orchid plus programme, and quality services are important schemes which retain consumer loyalty. The company aims to improve services and aircraft capacity in good condition. 2012 was the third year of a long-term plan to phase out 25 ageing aircraft and acquire 29 new aircraft by 2015. The number of aircraft of Thai Airways increased from 92 in the middle of 2010 to reach 96 in the middle of 2011. The ageing aircraft will be leased out to Nok Air and Thai Smile, the new sub-brand of Thai Airways International.
Transportation in Thailand is expected to record positive growth over the forecast period, with a constant value CAGR of 7%. The tourism boom is a key important factor which inspires the related organisations and authorities to reconsider improving their transportation facilities to serve an increasing number of tourists. Air is expected to remain as the key transportation facility to Thailand over the forecast period. Expansion plans in the second phase of Suvarnabhumi airport and hi-speed train projects are unlikely to be completed by the end of the forecast period. Bus/coach is expected to serve the majority of domestic travellers, while international routes of bus/coach should expect to see a shift in demand after ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015.
