Thai Airways International PCL in Travel and Tourism (Thailand) - a new company profile report on 2014-03-18 22:43:02
Thai Airways International Public Company Limited is the national carrier of the Kingdom of Thailand. It operates domestic, regional and intercontinental flights radiating from its home base in Bangkok to key destinations around the world and within Thailand. The company´s fully paid up share capital amounts to 16,988,765,500 Baht (9 May 2005) and is 53.77% owned by the Ministry of Finance, the Thai Government. An extraordinary number of arrivals were recorded in 2012, while Thai residents enjoyed travelling within the country as well as going abroad, in particular Asian Countries. Travel accommodation such as hotels witnessed various international chains and local chains expand new hotels mainly in Bangkok, Phuket, Hua Hin, Cha Am, Krabi and Samui. Car rental enjoyed new fleet sizes and new emerging brands from Germany; Sixt, was introduced in 2012. Health and wellness continued to record strong value growth due to the excellent performance of medical tourism. There were new fashionable tourist attractions introduced in 2012, such as Santorini Park Cha Am and Asiatique The Riverfront. Online players performed better than offline players within travel retail.

2012 was a very good year in which Thailand welcomed massive numbers of arrivals, which was due to the country´s situation being stable with no political protesters, no floods and a strong economy. The fast moving arrivals belonged to China and overtook the leading position of arrivals from Malaysia for the first time in 2012. The trend of Chinese tourists to Thailand is expected to remain positive due to popularity of Thai singers, Thai soap operas and close culture between China and Thailand. Many Chinese people settled down in Thailand during the review period, in particular in Bangkok.

After Suvarnabhumi International Airport operated for the first time in 2006, most airlines, including schedule and low cost carriers, moved to settle down in their new home. Until 2012, Suvarnabhumi airport reported problems of airline congestion and various flight delays, notably during peak tourist season. Therefore, the Airport of Thailand (AOT) announced it was relocating low cost carriers back to Don Muang Airport, which used to be the key international airport of Thailand before the established Suvarnabhumi airport. This relocation encouraged Don Muang Airport to redecorate its terminal and open up new duty free shops and restaurants to serve both local and international passengers. The mid- to long-term plan will be to expand Suvarnabhumi airport to serve huge growth of arrivals in the future.
