In 2012, almost all self-service cafeterias value sales were owned by independent local companies. Chained outlets owned marginal value share of sales in self-service cafeterias. IKEA and Vapiano, both multinational brands, were the only chained outlets in the category. IKEA owned 90% share of total chained self-service cafeterias, with its share increasing by eight percentage points in 2012.
The company stole share from Vapiano as it managed to preserve its number of outlets from the previous year and increased its sales. Vapiano, on the other hand, closed one of its two outlets and experienced considerable sales decrease with its share decreasing from 18% in 2011 to 10% in 2012.
