Taking into consideration the number of outlets, Gondola Holdings was the leading player in the UK´s chained FSR environment in 2012 with an outlet share of almost 19% (692 outlets) that year, followed by Yum! Brands, which accounted for 13% of the total chained FSR, and Mitchells & Butlers Plc with close to 12%. In terms of value sales, the top position was taken by Mitchells & Butlers with a value share of UK chained FSR of around 21%, followed by Gondola Holdings (17%) and Yum! Brands (9%).

Sales in FSR declined by 0.4% in current value terms in 2012 to stand at £16.4 billion, as consumers continued to trade down to more affordable eating out solutions. Fast food and takeaways benefited from this trend. Chained FSR performed better than independents as the former saw sales rising by almost 2% as the number of outlets expanded by over 2% to 3,706.
