Whilst Apple was the leading company in smartphones in 2012, topping the year with the best-selling iPhone 5 released in September 2012, its market share of 30-31% has remained virtually unchanged since 2011. It was unable to capitalise on the continued decline of Research in Motion´s Blackberry, the former smartphone leader, whose market share shrank 17% in 2012. Instead, it was Samsung that largely cannibalised Blackberry´s market share in smartphones.
Having built strong brand power around its flagship Android-based Galaxy smartphone series, Samsung continued to expand its overall lead in mobile phones, gaining share and becoming Apple´s top contender in smartphones as well as strengthening its number one position in feature phones, which, however, saw an overall sales decline, with most
OEMs, including Samsung´s closest rival in feature phones LG (third ranked in mobile phones overall), focusing on the more lucrative smartphone category.
